Why The Distance Collective Exists

Every year, youth running has a familiar story. A kid shows up at seven or eight years old, fast and fearless, and starts racking up wins. Coaches build teams around them. Parents start planning around travel meets. By eleven or twelve, that kid might be a national name.

Then high school hits. And more often than not, that kid is gone. Burned out, injured, or just done with a sport that stopped being fun somewhere around fifth grade.

We started Indiana Distance Collective because we got tired of watching that story repeat itself. So we built something different.

What We Believe

A twelve-year-old national champion doesn't always become a twenty-four-year-old national champion.

That's not a knock on talented kids. It's just biology and math. Puberty hits everyone on a different timeline. A kid who's bigger, stronger, or more developed at eleven has a real advantage that has nothing to do with how good a runner they'll be at nineteen. When we rank, cut, and reward kids based on where they stand today, we're often just measuring who hit puberty first, not who has the most potential.

So we built our program around a different question: not "who's the fastest right now," but "who's still here, still improving, and still in love with this sport five years from now?"

What That Looks Like at our Practices

Walk into a Distance Collective practice and you'll see seven-year-olds and seventeen-year-olds warming up together. They spread out once the miles pick up, but the start and the culture stay the same: kids jogging together, laughing, getting an easy stimulus in before drills.

Then we get to work on form. Cadence, posture, drills, the stuff that actually keeps kids healthy and fast over a lifetime, not just for one season. We celebrate progress here loudly. Nailing a drill. Fixing a stride. Showing up three weeks in a row. Those are the wins we talk about, not where someone finished in a race that happened once, eight months ago.

We coach the kid in first place and the kid in twentieth place with the same attention and the same enthusiasm. Nobody gets cut. Nobody gets left behind. Nobody has to wonder if they belong here.

Our Foundation

  • Every age, together. Seven to eighteen, training side by side. Supporting one another’s journey.

  • Form over finish times. We build runners from the ground up: technique, injury prevention, and durability.

  • Progress over placement. We celebrate the daily wins, not just the one race that happened to go well.

  • Everyone is welcome. Everyone is coached. No cuts, no rankings that decide who stays.

  • The goal is forty years from now, not four months from now. We're building kids who still love running long after they've stopped counting medals.

Your Pace. Your People. Built to Last.

We're not trying to build the fastest twelve-year-olds in Indiana. We're trying to build a place where kids fall in love with running and never have a reason to leave. If that sounds like the kind of team you want your kid to be part of, come run with us.
